Patrick's Story

Operation Freedom Bird 2010

Story and photographs by Patrick Ziegert-

On September 11, 2010, the ninth anniversary of the terror attacks on America I was working at a Yellow Ribbon Program event in Phoenix, Arizona. I just started my new job as the community partner liaison for the State’s reintegration program and I already had to see about taking some days off in November. It was because I received a call from Loraine Kern, a counselor at the Mesa Vet Center, inviting me to participate in Operation Freedom Bird...

Greg's Story

It all really began, of course, when I left Vietnam and went home in 1969. You know the situation-out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Thirty Three years later, in October, 2002 my counselor/team-leader at the Vet Center, Ken Hall in Prescott, AZ, called and invited me to go on the journey to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, on Veteran's Day Weekend the following month...a healing journey for those veterans who were recommended by their counselors as being ready for this trip. The program is called OPERATION FREEDOM BIRD....

 David C's Story

When I was invited to go on Freedom Bird in November 2011, it was only a couple of days before the flight was due to depart. As it turns out, that was a good thing. If I had had time to think about it, I would have turned down this opportunity. I had stubbornly avoided seeing any representation of the wall until about a month before the flight. One of the traveling Walls was at the Phoenix VA Hospital, and to get to where I was going, I had to walk past it.

Dave F's Story

My name is Dave F. and I went on the Freedom Bird trip. It was great from the start to finish. Starting at the airport everyone was so nice and greeted us with food and drinks. The plane ride was great and we got to talk to others on the ride. The hotel was nice and the bus ride took us all over. Seeing the Wall and other areas hit a soft spot in my heart...

John D's Story

I once walked in the bright sunlight,

Here in the land of freedom and might.

Then came my day of a long, long flight...
